Balthayock Castle (Perth) Past & Present

Balthayock Castle Perthshire

Balthayock after restoration in 1870

Situated some 3 miles from Perth and standing on the side of a ravine Balthayock is a massive tower house. The somewhat awkward appearance dates only from 1870 when it was rescued from ruin but its 10 foot thick walls indicate an early date, perhaps late 14th century.

The door is situated at first floor level and reached by a stone staircase, which, of course, replaces one of timber. The floor levels have been altered as have the windows. The platform roof dates from Victorian times.

There is a wall panel with the date 1578 but this is a late insertion. There is no sign of barmkin or outbuildings and the tower adjoins a modern mansion. The tower, though unoccupied, is in good condition.
