Tibbers Castle (Dumfries)

John Goodhall in his excellent new book 'The English Castle' (2011) asks the question 'Why did Edward I not build castles in Scotland as in Wales'?

He does illustrate, however, one castle that Edward did help build - that of Tibbers in Dumfries (1298) where the King contributed £100 towards its construction.

Unfortunately for Edward, no sooner was it finished than it was captured by Robert the Bruce!
