The Lee, a 19th-century mansion, may include some of a castle of the Lockharts.
The lands were held by the family from the 12th century. One story is that the Lockharts were so named because Simon Lockhart helped bring back the heart of Robert the Bruce from Granada where it had been taken on a crusade - although they were actually called 'Loccard' before then. The 'Lee Penny', a healing amulet consisting of a dark red gem set in a silver setting, was acquired by the family on a crusade, and could heal bleeding, fever, illnesses of animals and the bites of mad dogs when dipped in water. Allan Lockhart of The Lee was killed at the Battle of Pinkie in 1547, and George Lockhart of The Lee was an ardent Jacobite. The Lee was held by the Lockharts until the 20th century.
