Hunterston Castle - Small but Perfectly-formed

Hunterston Castle stands on what was once marshland near Seamill in Ayrshire.

Accounts mention a moat and rampart but what we see now is a small vaulted four-storey tower of the 15th century. A gun-looped entrance staircase dates from the 17th century. The original entrance was at first floor level, communication with the vaulted basement was by means of a hatch. The infilled arch was an entrance to a 1930’s garage.

Reports state that Hunterston Castle was once moated

The tower was sensitively adapted by Robert Lorimer in 1913 and much of the internal decoration is his.

The castle is a focus for Clan Hunter and the Scottish Castles Association will be visiting this small but perfectly-formed tower in April 2016.
